12. Will my health insurance cover the cost of my appointment?
If you have health insurance you may want to find out if they will cover the costs
of clinical psychology sessions. It is important to know that if you claim the cost
of sessions from your health insurance provider, any information that is provided
to them, for example a diagnosis, will remain on your health record.
It may be helpful to ask your health insurance provider the following questions
Does the insurer cover psychological therapy from a clinical psychologist (some policies
differentiate between clinical psychologists, other therapists and psychiatrists)?
Does the clinical psychologist need to be registered with the insurance company?
Does the insurer require a referral from a GP or psychiatrist (or other health practitioner)?
Does the insurer require you to be diagnosed with a mental health problem/ disorder
(e.g., DSM, ICD) and are there any diagnoses that they don’t cover?
Does the insurer cap cover at a particular number of sessions and/ or a monetary
limit? Is any cap per year or other time period?
