Summary

Dr Justin Grayer is a Clinical Psychologist (HCPC registered) and Sex Therapist (HKASERT Certified). He has 18 years’ experience in the study and practice of psychology, including a professional doctorate in clinical psychology from University College London (UCL). He has worked in the NHS, private practice and academia in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.

He specialises in working with people who are experiencing difficulties with their relationships, sexual or physical health. Within this specialism he frequently supports people struggling with anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol misuse.

Evidence-based psychological therapies used are: acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive analytic therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy for individuals; emotionally focussed therapy for couples.

Qualifications and accreditations

Dr Justin holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from UCL (University College London), a BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology (Cardiff University) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Sex Therapy from the Hong Kong Association of Sexuality Educators, Researchers and Therapists.  He is currently completing his diploma in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy (Middlesex University, London) and his certification in Emotionally Focussed Therapy for Couples (ICEEFT).

He is registered as a clinical psychologist with the United Kingdom’s Health and Care Professions Council, has chartered status with the British Psychological Society and is certified with the Hong Kong Association of Sexuality Educators, Researchers and Therapists.  

Clinical experience

Dr Justin currently works part-time in the NHS providing services to people with physical health problems which contribute to emotional distress or exacerbate pre-existing psychological difficulties, as well as contributing to sexual health problems.  

He spent four years working in Hong Kong private practice where he worked with people with relationship and sexuality related difficulties, physical health problems, addictions, stress/ anxiety and depression. His clients originated from Asia, Australasia, the Americas and Europe.

Before moving to Hong Kong, Dr Justin worked in London for the NHS. He worked in a sexual health psychology and psychotherapy service with people affected by sexually transmitted infections (including HIV/AIDS) and other sexual difficulties, often in tandem with drug and alcohol issues. He also set up and delivered a new psychology service for cardiac patients and their families.

During, and prior to, his professional training in clinical psychology at UCL, Dr Justin worked with adults in the NHS and non-government organisations. He supported people affected by depression, anxiety and stress; addictions; physical, sexual and neuropsychological problems. Specific projects included running a healthy sexuality project for young adults with learning disabilities; working with people with mental health and addiction problems in a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community project, and support for people with mental health problems in primary care.

Dr Justin is trained in and practices evidence-based psychological therapies. In general, when working with individuals, he tends to integrate acceptance and commitment therapy with cognitive-analytic therapy, or acceptance and commitment therapy with cognitive-behavioural therapy. When providing couple therapy, he draws on an emotionally focussed therapy framework.

Academic experience

Dr Justin holds the post of Honorary Lecturer on the UCL clinical psychology training course, as well as occasionally lecturing at other UK universities. In Hong Kong he was Adjunct Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology at City University of Hong Kong, where he focussed on community and clinical health psychology and addictions; he occasionally lectured at Hong Kong University.  

Dr Justin has presented at international conferences and published in peer reviewed journals, newspapers and magazines, and appeared on radio.  His doctoral thesis investigated the effects of chronic recreational ketamine use on cognition and subjective experiences.
